Socialism is actually a philosophy, not a political agenda. It was developed by Karl Marx who was an idealist. He believed in the idea that equality should extend across the board in all areas. While his philosophy was genuine, he didn't take into account the fact that humans always have to be on top.
We use the homeless, and the poverty level to fuel us higher up the ladder because we don't want to be like them. We use the rich to inspire our greed because we do want to be like them.
In the long run, idealism, while altruistic, isn't always what we need in this lifetime.
Some people equate the "hand-up" ideas to Socialism. In actuality, socialism is a leveler. It doesn't give free rides, but has expectations that everyone carry an equal amount of labor or weight.
The mess in the US can be attributed to greed, not socialism. The greed of some people inspires them to cheat or abuse the system. This, I detest. I do think, on some levels, that each and every person should be required to carry their own weight.
There was a program utilized in Mass., that went to a ghetto-like suburb. It hired the people on the streets, and the gangs on the streets, to clean the area up; renovate buildings for businesses; and some to actually run the businesses through low interest government loans. It was actually a very successful experiment, and I often wonder why it isn't applied more often.

The only true way to combat an idea you do not like in a democracy is at the polls. Vote for and elect like minded people who share your ideas and goals. This my be tough given that Socialism in not illegal, but the electoral process is your best bet.

The least of your worries is socialism. You should be more concerned with conglomerates and unchecked multi-national corporations!
Hey, we can't give all our money to the wealthy, They already have over 90% of it!
I am more concerned with fascist neocons!

identify the leaders of that foolish agenda and boycottt anything they support and boycot any company that supports them. I would never buy a NEW YORK TIMES, go to or rent movies from the socialist actors that hate our country. I will not pay for cable stations that support these people(sundance channel, NBC, etc.) We can get rid of them.
