There are many different kinds of wax. Most waxes found in nature (like ear wax or leaf wax) are long chain alcohol esters of (mostly saturated) fatty acids. Synthetic waxes are usually low molecular weight polyethylene. A common synthetic candle wax is a a co polymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate which burns more smoothly. Many years ago, candles were made of beef tallow. Some candles are still made with or including stearic acid.
