do you want to self publish or to what to find someone to publish it for you. if you self publish you'll have a hard time getting it into book stores. plus you have to front the money to purchase every copy of the book that you distribute to the book stores.
if you have someone else publish it, well first you have to find someone who wants to publish it, that publishes thing like you've written. for this you should look around. some of them will give you guidelines to submitting and outline or some sample chapters, some won't even talk to you unless you have an agent. (getting an agent works the same way, find some that work with similar authors and ask them for submission guidelines. you can find lists of publishers and agents, check barnes and noble in the their writing section.
if the publisher wants you book you'll have to sign contract and agreements. it's a long process that can take years or could never pan out at all.
hardcover and softcover don't mean much now a days, it more like a formality. they release a hard cover first because it's more elegant but most of the sales come from soft cover since their cheaper.
I'm not positive but i think the big publishing companies like random house pay at least 30,000. but thats not a static number.

Like irene i said you should get an agent and the best way to do this that i know of is to get "the writers and artist book 2007" it is really affective J.K. Rowling used it to get her books published, so why can't you. Once you have found an agent and your book has been accepted by a publisher, it will be edited many more times by a professional whist your manuscipt is being sent backwards and forwards between you and the publishers

You should then try to get an agent as most publishing houses will not accept unsolicited manuscripts, which are ones without
agents . Also , agents only make money when you do ,so those asking for any , and i do mean any money upfront should not be trusted.Do not expect a hundred thousand dollars on your first novel.Be realistic and be resilient.

T:
I have written and self published two books, a very hard row to hoe. Then I discovered this! I reccommend, If you browse to New York Literary Agency and follow their instructions. They ask you to send them a querry letter with a promise to answer in two days. (They Do) If interested in your work they ask you to send your manuscript by email and show you how to do this. They promise to get back to you in two weeks and again they do. They charge nothing unless they find you a publisher and then only 15% of books sold. You can't beat this. I know of no others that do this in this time frame. Trust me, if you go the snail mail route with others it takes up to three years to get an answer if you get one at all. Please, please let me know how you make out if you take this route.
