Okay so i'm getting a DSL connection. I want to share my connection with another PC in my house. I thought of a LAN connection but the downside is that if the main PC is off, I can't use the internet on the other. How else can I connect my PCs? Will router come of use here?
please help. thanx

You should try a Wireless ethernet card for the second computer, which would be connected to a router that keeps the second's computer internet connection on while the first is off... it would also allow a local area connection between the two.. I suggest a Linksis router... I had the same problem, and this is how I solved it.. Only I had 4 computers!!!

Use a Hub or the 4 ports on the Router.

Might take some long T-1 cable but its worth it as you only need one TCP/IP from the DNS.
A LAN is inside and outside the house, a WAN is outside the house.
Both PCs can use the same TCP/IP number that is assigned at logon to the ISP or network.
The numbers will be resolved by the Host, it is all rather automatic, TCP/IP , will set one machine at 1.111.11..0.01
and another at 1.111.11.0.002
Then both are online.
Yes a router is quite a handy piece of hardware that serves as a NAT Firewall and also helps the Machine connect to the Host properly.

Well i'll tell you least expensive solution

1. Both PC should have LAN card
2. A cross cable ( u need to purchase one if u can not create urself)
3. Download trial version of software ccproxy(http://www.youngzsoft.net/ccproxy/ccproxysetup.exe) or any other proxy

now install ccproxy on the machine wihich is directly connected to DSL,
connect both PC with cross cable
assign IPs to both PC's LAN :
goto network connection double click LAN Connection icon, click properties, go to Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) must be last in the shown list, set IP to 10.0.0.1 for first machine and 10.0.0.2 for other, subnet should be 255.255.255.0 for both and a catch here, Default gateway should be vice versa of IP's for first machine gw should be 10.0.0.2 and for other it should be 10.0.0.1, (and now just lemme tell you that u can assign any IPs and gateway it is not required that you have 10.0.0 series,),
now just to be sure of all settings open command prompt on both PC and ping each other, i.e fire this command
ping 10.0.0.1 on pc whose ip is 10.0.0.2
and vice versa, if u r getting Reply from 10.0.0.1........ then BINGO, network thing is done,
if not then see if firewall is running on any machine, for time being switch it off ( right click on network icon in task bar[goto network connection again if icon is not there], change windows firewall setting, and then switch off).
run ccproxy on DSL pc,
on other u need to open internet explorer, goto internet options
then connections
then lan setting
and then select a proxy, mention IP as 10.0.0.1 and port as 808 ( can be changed from cc proxy but default is 808),
test now,,, and u an go thorough ccproxy help also....
hope this will solve your problem
ALL THE BEST

You can get a small ADSL Router to get the job done, since the LAN doesnt match with your requirements.
