Vista is designed for 64bits system, if you bought your computer in the last year or so you should be alright. But at the moment current versions of firewalls and anti-virsus systems most likely will not run correctily with Vista, as vista is sufficiently different from past windows systems. So if you want Vista, wait, until the antivirus software vendors have put out a versions which is compatible with Vista.

Incase anyone wanted to know PEBKAC means: Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair, or a user created problem.

At this moment... No. Even if you just upgrade to basic its not worth it yet. Generally MS products take 6months to 1yr to stabilize. Even then most programs will remain backwards compatible with XP machines. I'm sticking with XP for awhile.

If you insist on taking the leap...

The biggest issue with Vista for upgraders is the RAM.

People above are telling you "1GB to run vista 'Smoothly' "
Well, Aero is alittle more thirsty then that. For absolute smooth running with more then a few apps open 2GB is the recommended amount.

I was personally told to have at least 1Gb of DDR memory in order to run vista smoothly, if you have a machine that has less than 1.5x the required minimum i recommend investing in a new machine altogether, technology moves very fast

if its something like a commodore 64 its probably not going to run but if your computers is only 2-3 years old it should run. it might not be able to run all the features in vista but it should be able to run the core elements.
