We have all heard about vista's hardware requirements. Sure a computer with a 1Ghz CPU, 1gb ram, 128mb video ram (for the areo effect) etc. will run the operating system but what will it really take to run the OS smoothly is what i want to know. I want to run games, make movies, convert my CD's in mp3's not just use it for web browsing and checking my emails...

Not counting RAM or CPU, you should be able to do all you want with these specs:

Windows (Recommended minimum hardware requirements):
1-gigahertz (GHz) 32-bit (x86) processor or 1-GHz 64-bit (x64) processor
1 GB RAM
40-GB hard disk that has 15 GB of free hard disk space (the 15GB of free space provides room for temporary file storage during the install or upgrade.)
Internal or external DVD drive
A Windows Aero-capable graphics card : Supports a Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) driver, Has a DirectX 9-class graphics processor unit (GPU) that supports Pixel Shader 2.0, Supports 32 bits per pixel, Passes the Windows Aero acceptance test in the Windows Driver Kit (WDK)
Internet access capability
Audio output capability

Various tech advisors have said they think RAM should be at least 2GB and CPU speed at least 2GHz. And there's considerable reaosn to wait a while before switching to Vista..... not least of which is Microsoft's past history of releasing new products that have a multitude of real user problems (like SP2 for XP was almost as large as the entire Win 98 operating system, like IE7 - which was in development for 5 years - is still giving people grief, etc. etc.)

Realistically... probably a dual core processor with 2 GB RAM. Not sure about the video card... but for games in general, 128MB is rather on the low side now... shoot for a 256 card or above if your mobo has a PCI Express graphics slot.

you better get a motherboard & a decent chipset that supports RAM greater than 2 GB & tally the other specifications too. 2-2.5 GB would be enough to operate a game in vista. if you are willing to spend some more, you could get an external graphics card.consult a trusted dealer for the optimum specifications.
