To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 to return to Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP
Click "Start," and then click "Control Panel."
Click "Add or Remove Programs."
Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box.
Scroll down the list and highlight the version of Internet Explorer 7 that you are running, and then click "Change/Remove."
Uninstall that,restart your PC and you are on IE6

Click on start / Settings / Control Panel / Add Remove Programs / Change or Remove Programs button (on left) / Highlight Windows Internet Explorer 7 / then click the Remove button and follow the prompts
I'm assuming you're installing another browser like Firefox or something in which case...
Should the above not work make your NEW Browser the default browser and delete any visual sign of Internet Explorer.
To get rid of Internet Explorer off your desktop: Right click your desktop and click properties / click the Desktop tab / click the Customize Desktop button / uncheck Internet Explorer / OK / Apply / OK
