A carton is generally a smaller container than a crate, and is usually made from paper, paper pulp, cardboard, etc. with or without plastic sheet covering for added strength. Computers, small electronic items, soda cans, jelly bottles, etc. are a few of the numerous items which are packed in cartons. By their very nature, cartons carry lesser weights than a crate.
A crate isa container made from wood. wooden planks, or other material that can take heavier loads than what a carton would, such as heavy machinery. Nails are used to hold the wooden planks together, and some box strapping is also used to give additional strength.

Difference between crate and carton?

The most common difference is a crate is made of wood and a carton is made of paper. Crates generally protect machinery and heavier items and cartons generally are for smaller items (but this is not a hard and fast rule).
