I found a key and there is a serial number on the back. Could I use this to find what the key goes to? Could I use it to find out who's it is so I could return it?

I know that at our biz we serial number all keys for key logging procedures--to charge people for lost keys--but unless you know the company that the key came from or like info, then it is useless to try and figure it out.
