All these items are made by children, women and artists who are trained by non profit organisations in India to help them support themselves financially. Some of the items are paper gift bags, serving trays, minutely hand embroidered cushion covers, wall hangings, brass carvings depicting daily life in villages and many other such hand worked creations.I would like to help them find a market outside India so we can get constant orders to help them improve the quality of their life.

MMM I want to go back to India! You are so lucky to be there! I spent last spring in Kerala and Tamil Nadu with my new Malayalam husband and left my heart in the Western Ghat mountains. Not a day goes by without my remembering our time there as if it were yesterday. A dream within a dream within a dream.

My daughter has a dear friend who does just what you are asking about. I will send you the address for his business so you might be able to get an idea of how he goes about it. Also here in Canada there are organization such as 10,000 Villages that only deal with such goods. Perhaps you might find other such organizations via internet searching?

His business is called Artisania. Here is the URL.

You might also consider contacting the Grameen Bank created by Mr. Muhammed Yunus of Bangladesh for suggestions. If you have not heard of Mr. Yunus, please do a web search on him. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for the establishment of a bank based on the concept of lending micro loans to the poor. I would imagine you might find some good outlets for the goods of these people through some contacts held by his loose but effective organization.

I wish you well in your endeavor and thank you from the bottom of my heart for your help with these people. I wish there was more I could offer but that is all I can think of for now. You could also just do some serious Googling and see what you might come up with.

Could these artisans not combine and form a commune as is done in many parts of Kerala where they can gather to sell? It seems we ran across such things in Bangalore as well as Munnar and in Cochin. They were government sponsored to a great extent if I remember correctly.

Salaam ailikum. May good fortune always smile upon you and those you seek to assist.
