80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

Life does not end with death. Nor does it begin with birth. Life always IS. It is only the physical bodies in which it periodically resides that appear and disappear, that have "birth and death".
The meaning of life is to come to see that in reality there is no birth and death of any one or anything., since all is infused by this Life. There is a constant transfer of Life into forms and back into formlessness, and a constant change and evolution, in the physical sense, of forms into other forms.
The so-to-speak individualized Life at last realizes that all forms are limitations. a bondage. a prison and abandons them for good to "re-unite" with the Infinity, to "(re-)become" Infinity. But it has been this all along - only the limitations of form had been preventing it from realizing this.

Right, if life would end with death there would not be a meaning.
Some people just mix up their body with themselves and forget that they are just using and having a body. The meaning that any material thing dies is that it brings refreshment. Look in nature, a dead body, plants etc give nourishment to the earth, so that it can renew itself.
We are but more and only use this body for a short period. The language sais it so clearly. It sais I have a body. Or MY body. Or my brain, or my heart. What is this I or this MY ? This is what lives on.

If you view death as the result of life, you'll never get anywhere. You can't focus on the beginning and the end - spend your time living in the inbetween.
I believe the purpose of life is to experience life. We (as the earth's populous) are all connected (either directly or indirectly) because we are affected by each other's experiences.

The meaning of life is to live for Christ therefore life is eternal. The death of the body is the end of biological life; after that your soul goes to be with God for the duration of forever. And I say AMEN to that. Jesus is the Alpha and Omega--the Beginning and the End. His love endures forever. Jesus loves you and has a plan for your life. Give yourself to him and he will be the Lord of your life and you will spend eternity with him. Get saved today. You'll be glad you did. I'm praying for you right now that you meet someone who will help you find your way.

Please consider this song I wrote. It's called "DESTINATIONS!".... I think it will answer your question:
Mountains all around me
ranges line my past
another peak before me
could this be at last?
Because I always thought the answers
were on the other side
not to sound depressing
but it seems that someone's lied
Because up here it's lonely
taste the bitter cold
fear I may have missed out
on this so-called pot-of-gold
but then I see the water
touch the valley down below
turning rocks to forests
and this is when I know
It's not the destination
giving meaning to the mile
it's all we touch along the way
that makes our life worthwhile!
Hope that helps............

Lamb Pathia with Pillau Rice. Two poppadums. Plenty of lime pickle and mango chutney. A couple of bottles of Cobra Beer.
Later, walking home, the sky is clear and the distant stars are bright. The wind hits the back of your throat like a cold knife and, for a moment, takes your breath away.

It depends what you mean by life. Life only has meaning in the context of whom we love and who loves and cherishes us. The whole point of living is to love others and build a community of loving people. Many of us believe it to be a trial for a future life, when, after a huge final battle against all the evils in the world, attacks, cruelty ,intolerance, disasters, diseases etc. that they will all be overcome by the huge army of loving people. Then there will be no more death, mourning or weeping. If you want this you need to study the ways of real loving. A good place to start is the Apocalypse or Revelation of St John in the Christian Bible. It is scary but contains a wonderful promise for us.This Battle is echoed in the Final Battle in the Lion, the Witch and the Warderobe, in which Peter, the leader of the church fights against evil and seems to lose but is saved at the last moment when Aslan (God symbol)intervenes. Love is a good reason for living and death has no meaning for those who have consecrated themselves to Christ and will live on in Him. God loves each one of us. The Bible says, he knows how many hairs are on our head. We are all unique and precious and loving each other during our trial time on earth makes things better for everyone. Christians are, like everyone else, sinners. We all do things wrong and have no hope of improving unless we struggle to love and be better and not give way to wild , evil of cruel impulses. So for us, life does not end in death at all. People can only find this grace of faith if they study and allow themselves to consider and meditate on these things. So the Cause of love and care, tolerance and joy are the goals of life. Because Jesus overcame death (and this event is written in various Latin texts outside the Bible and in the work of the Jewish Scholar Josephus) in the resurrection. Christ (the name means 'the annointed One' as he was God in a human form) promised us all if we put our trust in Him, we can reach the Heaven or paradise with him after death. Paul asks 'Where O death is your sting? Where, O grave is your victory?) Peter and Paul were both real people. If you want to know more there is a new film about St Paul, now on DVD, which explains the basic ideas about Christianity which is probably an easier way of approaching the whole idea than reading a modern Bible if you are not used to it. It is all very human and living and very dramatic, as the most angry evil persecutor of Christ is directly called by Christ, which totally amazes and changes him into a loving person who consecrates his whole life to Him. The terrible suffering of Christ is mirrored by the evil in the world, and the suffering existing with it and so we say Christ is at one with us in terrible sufferings and in death. There are also many miracles and healings. We cannot know everything, because we are looking at a dim image in a mirror but when we see face to face we shall understand everything.Interestingly the Church is not just the people today,it is called The Body of Christ and includes all Christians, living and 'dead' in the earthly sense , waiting for the Second Coming, which will only come at the end of the world. What is strange is that so many people are fascinated by programmes like 'Most Haunted' series. They already believe in spirits, so this is a leap forward from this idea. Those we love are waiting if they have lived their lives in love. Evil spirits are often described as 'earthbound' and cannot leave. this idea is a glimpse of an idea of this, though not Christianity in itself. Evil is very strong in the world and people have to hold out against it, and live their lives in a way which will not let it flourish. This is the struggle of life and the reward in Paradise we believe is worth it.

fe – it has a meaning and loving purpose - you just have to find your purpose and live it.
I believe every person is here for a definite purpose. Each person is special and valuable; that refers to me, you, your family, friends, in fact everybody! There is a loving plan for each of our lives here on earth and there is no such thing as coincidence. I don't believe that anything in life happens by chance and that every aspect of our lives points to something deeper.
You need to decide now to live for God rather than for yourself. You spend your life on Earth preparing yourself (as best you can) for death. I don't see death as a scary, negative experience, but birth into a bliss filled eternal life with God. I believe that this is something you have to consciously choose or not during your life on earth.
The meaning of life is for us to discover that we are true children of an infinitely loving and merciful God, to find out what our responsibilities are to our Creator, and to fulfill those responsibilities. Each of us is called to affirm, accept and develop the talents God has given us. -
