Do you feel as though some US citizens/celebrities are making helping the children of Africa "trendy"?
What the Africans need instead of our money is Sex Education, Condoms, and/or operations to be sterile. WHY have NINE children when you can't feed yourself!?!

Obviously this is a very complex issue. I understand we are sending money to help these issues, but I suppose what really gripes me is what Ashely D, Mary P, and others were saying...There are plenty of children here in the United States that need our help. I didn't see Oprah, but "yes" I do feel like the wealthy are treating the African children like the New Coach Purse...great analogy!

I have always said, "Feed your own family before you feed someone elses."
We have too many "unwanted" children in the US that needs to be adopted. Why go to ANY other country to adopt a child or help a child. God forgive me, but we are supposed to help each other, then help others.
The celebrities that have made the air waves by adopting "foster" children, need to have their visa's revoked.
Take a motherless child and deem them "foster" is pitiful. That child's father was there but couldn't take care of HIS child. Too many children in America that ARE foster, homeless, disabled, unwanted, abused, unloved, etc. to go anywhere else.
YES, I believe it is too trendy. It gets them more air time. The public needs to have a pouring of disgust towards these "famous" people to show how we feel they are doing "our" children.
If they want a child of "color", there is plenty in children's homes of every color right HERE..........
DANG they can really hit a nerve. I wish I could tell them how UN-AMERICAN that makes them seem to most people.
Take care of your own house, "children", before you take care of someone else'.
I feel the same way about our government. Sending billions of dollars to help a different country rebuild, but we have thousands homeless here. With the government just sweeping them under the doormat.
Sorry, that's a different subject. Just close to this one.

Oh my goodness.. I do agree with you.
But, did anyone see Oprah today (probably not..) but there were these group of rich white women from the same church who all adopted about 6 African kids each. I was sitting there watching the whole time, thinking, "yeah, that's great. It was really nice of them to do that. But, then again, what about the children here in America waiting to be adopted" BUT, the thing that aggravated me was how they acted like they were all high and mighty. One of the women said, "God gave us this mission to save these children from the scoundrels. We are Gods messengers." Umm. Get over yourself lady. I couldn't help but think of how these rich people these days seem to think adopting an African child is "the thing to do". While it is a great thing they are doing - it just seems to me that a lot of them are running out getting African children like they were a new Coach purse or something.

I agree, Their should be sexual education and preventives in Africa to combat against AIDS/HIV and unwanted pregnancy but it is not that simple. Remember, Africa is still an undeveloped country with many problems so they need all the help, money and condoms they can get. Plus, they have a completely different customs and values different from the US. Solving the problems of Africa isn't that easy or cut and dry because of the government, recent genocide, lack of education and lack of technological advances.

In most African cultures, children are a sign of wealth. Sex education and condoms will only work if you can change the peoples culture, and that will take more than one generation. Africans are starting to change their way of thinking, but to many, especially rural people, their culture is still the most important thing to them.

they have children because they need the help around the household and because culturally they are expected to have a lot of kids in some places
we send a lot of money for AIDS and sex education and condom use. If you feel that its inadequate you could start up your own nonprofit or support an already existing one and spread the word to your friends.

They are starving so they need food and livelihood. lt is also to cure the sick and the dying. They also need to be educated.
The problem is is not just about sex. Even if you hand out condoms the problems won't go away.

because they don't know any other way in their culture its I'm guessing ok to have kids and maybe nobody really thought of the idea of not having children when they're so poor... they are not sexually educated so they don't know how to protect them self's of unwanted pregnancy or other sexually transmitted diseases etc. you don't know what's better until you learn it from somewhere.
p.s. and they're to poor to afford any contraception's or condoms
