Do you think Woody Allen is still a great director? Are his more recent films even in the same league as the movies he made in the 60's, 70's and 80's?

Yeah, the whole marrying his daughter thing was sleazy and disgusting in an unbelievable way - and still is.

That certainly left a whole aura of nastiness and a general "ick factor" when you think of Woody Allen and his wife/daughter Soon-Yi Previn.

YES! He is no longer original--he even copies himself. "Matchpoint" addressed the same themes as his 1989 masterpiece "Crimes and Misdemeanors" . Watch these two films, and you will see Woody in his prime, and Woody selling out.

Woody Allen, who was born Allen Stewart Konigsberg on 01 December 1935, is now physically 71 years old.
As Allen's first directorial effort was 'What's Up, Tiger Lily ?' (1966), he is now in the 40th year of his cinematic career.
...Ever since he joined Dreamworks SKG studio in 2000, he has shown signs of deterioration - with only 1 hit (Match Point, 2005), plus 5 flops (Small Time Crooks, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, Hollywood Ending, Anything Else, plus Melinda and Melinda) to show !...
...According to Allen himself (quoting from a 2004 interview), "In the United States things have changed a lot, and it's hard to make good small films now. The avaricious studios couldn't care less about good films - if they get a good film they're twice as happy, but money-making films are their goal. They only want these $100 million pictures that can make $500m."
...When one is forced to 'make money', one cannot really be truly creative - and it shows in Woody Allen's work.

I don't give a rip about Woody Allen's personal life...or Mel Gibson's...or _______ (fill in the blank). I'm a movie-goer, not a critic of the personal behavior of filmmakers.

I think Allen is still capable of remarkably good films. In my opinion, "Match Point" should have received an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay; it was that well written.
