I am going into music and sick of the jokes that people make about music students in college. Like I'm dumb and can't do anything else. Please tell me that you don't think that do you?

Several of my friends were education majors, and while their jobs will be harder than mine, their training was easy (even they boasted about the fact that it was a cakewalk). Music history, orchestration, music theory, counterpoint, Schenkerian Analysis, aural perception, conducting, form and process... none of those are easy courses, and *definately* not for someone with nothing but air between their ears!

As was mentioned, getting a job might be a little tougher, so if you can you might want to try and minor in something or at least take some business courses. I was a music major and know lots of people who were vocal performance majors; I only know of 3 in the last couple years at my school who even went on to programs for a Masters in vocal performance. One of the others is settling into marriage, another is working as an admin assistant in Sacramento, and another in the Registrar's office of our University. Just make sure you have something to fall back on to pay the bills while you work toward your dream!

Good luck!! :)

Some music majors are dumb and can't do anything else. Some are geniuses. One common thing among them is that they have problems finding employment. If you love music, stay with it and follow your dream. I think music can be a wonderful curriculum. But I would also major in something such as education or business so you will have the skills needed to make your talents successful.

Good Luck!

Music involves much practice and time outside of class. Most of my music major friends had dual degrees. Say business or psychology. Either you can learn marketing or industrial psychology.

Personally I majored in psychology and work in healthcare. I do academic research at a local university school of medicine.I also wish I had some music classes in college. I only work three days a week and want to learn piano as a hobby.

Honestly, I think music majors have a limited future. I also think the same thing about liberal arts majors. I could just be biased towards my major, but i think science majors have the best upside. They have very good job security. There will always be a need for the skills science majors possess. I just cant think of too many job oportunities for music majors

There's nothing wrong with majoring in music. It's a tough major though, requires a lot of discipline. The people making fun probably are taking the easy road and doing one for the money. As long as you like what you're doing, don't be bothered by what they have to say.

I see nothing wrong with music majors. Who do people think compose the songs they hear in movie and television sound tracks? Makes the music? Writes the operas? The musicals? Gives soul to life with rock and roll, jazz, etc.? Go for it babe!
