Over the course of your cycle, your cervix changes dramatically. Generally going from low, firm and closed after your period to high, soft, and open at ovulation. The cervical changes are a fairly reliable indicator of the fertility state prior to ovulation, but can become erratic afterward.

I have not heard of the cervix being a reliable indicator of very early pregnancy. In both my pregnancies, mine shifted around quite a bit. The cervix does soften and shorten sometime around 6 weeks though and is considered a sign of pregnancy on a vaginal exam. Of course, by that time, the woman usually already knows she's pregnant.

A long, hard cervix is very normal for the few days before a period begins. Though, I've found my cervix usually begins to soften and open a little right before my period. So, it's also possible your firm cervix is a sign of pregnancy. There's no reliable way to tell just from the cervix.

Good question. The only time I've ever heard anything about your cervix being soft is when you are in labor and it starts to efface (thin out), soften (get spongy), and dialate (open) to let the baby through. I'm 35 weeks pregnant with my 3rd and I had some uterine irregularity (contractions) a few weeks ago and went in to the hospital to get checked out. When the doc "checked me" she said "you're high, hard and closed up" -all good things for me. It showed the crazy contractions weren't strong enough to cause labor. It was the first time I ever heard the term "hard" for my cervix. I've always heard soft or it's softening so I guess I'm just assuming. Anyway, good luck and take care.
