How do you know anything is true? Some of these answers are good, some realistic and practical. Like most things, if a guy says he loves you it might be helpful to find out what he means by "love". And what do you mean by that term? This is a pretty serious issue so if he drops the L word on you, take the time to talk it over with him. Find out what it means to him and tell him what it means to you. If he truly loves you he should be willing to talk about his feelings. Even if you don't reciprocate, it is helpful to both of you to talk it out. Maybe what he means by "love" is similar to whatever you feel for him. So communicate.

You can't know if he means it when he says he loves you. A man will tell you anything to get what they want. The only way you can know if he really cares is by the way he treats you over a long period of time.

Well I believe that you really know it when a guy starts doing little and big things for you.....you know "selfless" acts~thinking of you and doing helpful things.
I know w/my husband, when I 1st met him, he was ALWAYS helping me w/my car, going shopping with me, taking me to any kind of app. I had when my transportation was down back then, making me dinner, attending family functions, saying really sweet things to me and trust built more and more over time...remaining faithful and honest, so a lot goes into a relationship-but words are a start.

If he treats you like family. If he is as kind or kinder and as thoughtful as he is with his own Mother or whomever he is closest with. If YOU feel the same way and adore him and look up to him and you both treasure one another. If you can see each other in the future when old and ailing and can still love one another. That is LOVE!

It's funny because I think sometimes you can and sometimes you can't. But if you're ever doubting the honesty of your squeeze's words...then maybe there's a lack of trust. And observe his behavior before and after he said this.

He's bought you gifts, he's showed up for no reason to see you where you are, he's thumping other guys who try to move in on you, he's not giving you dope, beer, or cigarettes, his first order of business is not trying to get in your pants. Also he has a job and spends HIS money on you.

Most of the time you can just feel it. Look into his eyes they tell all. The number one thing is if you trust him believe him.

If his hand is up your skirt or jumper at the time I'd be wary. However, if he treats you well, shows respect and has earned your trust it just could be true.
