Looks like you might have to give up watching with your friends (THIS time), but there's no reason the game wouldn't be on at her folks house, is there?
You could explain the whole thing to your girlfriend and see if dinner can be rescheduled. Good luck with that, though LOL. (but what kind of family IS that if they don't understand that the Super Bowl is the last REAL football game of the season, and that you'd like to watch it?).
On the other hand, if you forget that the Super Bowl is now played on the first Sunday in February, you really do deserve whatever happens to you in the way promises to girlfriends and family dinner stuff.
But seriously, are we talking about future in-laws here? You never mentioned being engaged.... what kind of future father-in-law would this guy BE if he didn't understand the importance of the Super Bowl?
However, TIVO-ing or taping the game might not be a bad option either... that way you don't have to sit through idiotic halftime crap like Prince. Just fast forward through halftime and watch the game (and the commercials, which are usually pretty good in most years).
Of course, it could just be a plot on their part to see what you'll do, LOL.
If you record the game, you can still have dinner with your girlfriend and her folks, and still not miss anything. And, you can watch the game in half the time.
Just make sure that if you want to watch the game not knowing the outcome, don't pick up messages on your answering machine or cell phone voice mail, just in case they mention anything about the game. Just watch it in the quiet of your own house after dinner.
As a previous answer said, if you love the girl, go ahead and have dinner with her folks...there's a good chance you'll all hit it off, and have a great time. Also, I think you'd eventually regret not having dinner more than you'd regret not watching the game live. Record the game, watch it later, and get the best of both worlds.
Finally, and most important of all, is the lesson here... from now on, ANY plans you make on a Sunday should be preceeded with the question "are there any important playoff games that are being played that day?" And don't forget that playoff games are played on Saturday as well! During the regular season, always tape the game and have dinner with your girlfriend, to show her that you don't care if you miss a game here and there!
Whatever you do, DO NOT get sick that day... if they're oblivious to the fact that it's Super Bowl Sunday (unlikely) and then realize it this weekend, then they'll think you faked being sick in order to watch the game instead of having dinner with them. That's NEVER a good thing.
Good luck to you!

Since it's a Sunday and it's unlikely that her parents are working on that day, try to set it up for a lunch date with your girlfriend and her parents. Tell them that you made a prior commitment and you intend to honor it, but that you don't want to disappoint them. If the lunch date is unacceptable to them, they may offer to reschedule. Just be honest, whatever you do. If you lie about where you're going or what you're doing, you WILL get caught.
Honestly, the right thing to do is to go to your girlfriend's parents' house and enjoy a nice dinner with them. Maybe her dad will watch the game, and it will serve as an icebreaker. Or perhaps she's actually setting you up for a surprise, and it's a party you're going to. You never know.
If you're serious about your girlfriend, maybe you should start developing some new traditions with you and her. Just my two cents there.

I've always found that in the long run honesty is the best policy. I would just tell them as soon as possible that I have forgotten about a prior engagement. I was so overwhelmed with the Idea of dinner with their family that I just totally for got. I would impress upon them that the Super Bowl has been a tradition for years, it only comes once a year. Then for the Icing on the cake. If you can afford to, then offer to take them out to dinner next Sunday. If not, then don't mention taking them out. I wish you well.

Have you asked your girlfriend if her dad is a football fan? Chances are he'll be watching the game anyway and you can watch it with him. If not, then get some huevos and tell your girl she'll have to reschedule for another time because you're watching the game that day.

Well I mean I like going to bars and hanging out with friends on Super Bowl Sunday just as much as any other guy, but I mean the Super Bowl is on every year. If this girl is really that special to you, you'll just tape the game and watch it later. You get a ton of times to get drunk with your friends and watch the Super Bowl, but you only get one chance to make a good first impression on your girlfriends parents.

Tough call that one. If she really loves you she will allow you to watch the Superbowl. However if she doesn't then you should dump her. This is probably a very good indicator as to whether your relationship will stand the test of time or not.

First of all, you should lose your man card for "forgetting" the Super Bowl was this weekend. That's another issue. Now, for how to weasel out. If you are serious about this girl, no weaseling requiered, suck it up, you screwed up. Pray they are watching it over at her parents. Now, if you really don't care about his girl, a good old fashioned lie is easy. Someone is in the hospital..buddy, family member....one of your buds got pulled for a DUI and you have to bail him out. Or....you have the flu. Right before the game call her up all choked up hacking and gagging and say you are heading to bed because you are so tired. If she asks to come over to take care of you, you say no because you don't want her to catch it. she'll think you are sleeping and leave you alone so she won't wake you. Worst case scenario you get caught but you could care less because you are lying to her anyway...right?

I sure that her parents are well aware of what take place this Sunday. Give them some credit. I'm sure they will watch it or let you off the hook at some point to go watch it.
In any case you promised and you have to be a man of your word and keep it. There is no getting out of this.

Dude - meet the girls parents and watch the superbowl with them. If she is really into you she will know you want to watch the game. Also - unless you are really a Bears or Colts fan does this game really matter to you?
Good Luck!!!

Bro...your screwed. Unless you invest on a VCR or tivo or Dish. There is no way out of it. You could be hospitalized near coma and if you don't show up your in some deep stuff. In the end its the relationship that you should treasure above a football game.
