What to expect the first year is a great book. I have read them all, what to expect when your expecting, first yr, and toddler yrs. I found them all very good, and helpful. Just remember, all babies grow and develop at different rates. Just don't get frustrated if the book tells you your baby should be doing "this" by this age... some children are quicker and some are slower. I have even referred back to them with my second child. I highly recommend the 1st yr. Good luck in your search.

My favorite was "Your Baby and Child: From Birth to age Three" by Penelope Leach. Probably the most common sense book on childbirth and everything babies I've ever seen.
She's great about saying "Here's the low end of normal, here's the high end of normal, if your baby is anywhere in between, then don't sweat it... go with the flow. If your baby is outside these norms, then talk to the pediatrician about it to see if there's anything to be concerned with." And she does that on every subject you can imagine!!
I really steered clear of any book that says, "THIS is the ONLY way to raise a baby".... And I raised three pretty awesome people...

I suggest not reading any of them at all. I read them all w/ my first baby and I was at the doctors every other week cause my baby wasn't doing what she was "suposed to be doing at that age", I threw away the books while I was pregnant w/ my second baby and it was a much less stressfull time. You cant raise a baby on a book and you will just drive you, your baby and your doc crazy trying to get your baby where she "should be".

At the very top of my list is The Baby Book by Dr. Sears. It's an amazing wealth of information.

I used it, but my son is eight now. I thought it was very good and informative & is probably more updated. I'm sure there is way more out there now to choose from than there was when I had him. Good luck & Congratulations!!

I THOUGHT IT WAS GREAT. YOUR PEDIATRICIAN SHOULD ALSO BE ABLE TO GIVE YOU HANDOUTS ON WHAT TO EXPECT DURING CERTAIN MONTHS OF DEVELOPMENT.
