Oils coat the exoskeleton or 'skin' of adult lice, basically keeping them from getting oxygen and ultimately suffocating them. A study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health found that lice that were submerged in olive oil for two hours died. However, lice submerged in olive oil for only one hour recovered. Vegetable oils or a combination of vegetable oil with essential oils may be applied to the head (after thorough combing to remove nits) to thoroughly saturate the hair and coat the lice. Then the head may be covered with a shower cap or towel. After a minimum of two hours, the oil can be washed out (probably requires washing 2-3 times). Next, examine the hair for eggs and remove any that are seen. The process may be repeated every four days to kill emerging lice before they mature and can lay new eggs. The same premise applies to the use of mayonnaise on the hair to remove lice. Synthetic oils, such as kerosene or motor oil, are dangerous and should never be used.
For really resistant lice, essential oils can be added to contribute to the efficacy of the vegetable oil, but a skin test should be performed, as some people are sensitive to the oils. To do a skin test, apply a drop of oil to the inside of the elbow and check the area after several hours. If any signs of irritation are seen, do not add essential oils. If irritation is experienced during treatment, shampoo the mixture out immediately. Here's a recipe for a natural lice treatment:
2 ounces vegetable oil (e.g., olive oil)
20 drops tea tree essential oil (melaleuca)
10 drops rosemary essential oil
10 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops lemon essential oil (may be found in spice section of grocery store)
To use, combine the ingredients and perform a skin test. If no sensitivity is experienced, apply the mixture to dry hair. Cover hair with a shower cap or even a plastic bag, Leave the mixture on for 1-2 hours. Shampoo the hair 2-3 times to remove the oil.

Hi! My name is Ali Gajani. I am from Karachi Pakistan.. To kill these irksome headlice, I have a very useful traditional Sindhi way to kill it.. It is to take the pure strongest guava oil and get it massaged on your head and hair for about an hours and then use the simplist and thinnest comb usually yellow coloured to smoke out these little lice.... but this can only be done during 1 or 2'oclock in the afternoon, under the powerful rays of the hydrobugneous SUN and ask someone with a gifte eyesight to get those dead or almost about-to-die lice out from your mighty brain , what I call it because the question is ..... what should I say stunnig because headlice is something that keeps a human being from getting developed.... physically and mentally.... seriuosly !TRUST ME>> BYE Take Care...

My daughter caught it from a child at school. I was so embarrassed and then I learned it's very common in schools these days. They even do head checks on each child in the class once every other week! There is no natural way that works. People will come up with ideas for you to try, but in the end, it's best to go buy the shampoo at the pharmacy. Even after you kill them, you still have to pick each nit and all the eggs out or they will come back. It's almost impossible to kill the eggs. It's tedious getting rid of them, but necessary. Best Wishes to you.

wet your hair a little and then cover it completely with a lot of conditioner (your hair should be completely white from conditioner). put a plastic bag on your hair for 10-15 minutes. This suffocates the lice. Then, get a good lice comb with long teeth and comb through your hair THOROUGHLY, wiping off the comb with a tissue each time and throwing the tissue out. Repeat this 1-3 days as needed. And remember, it's only lice. I've had it. It doesn't mean your dirty--just friendly : )
Good luck!

Many remedies contain strong insecticides, which can be harmful. There are safe, more natural remedies you can buy. Otherwise, try a hair product that contains dimethicone (the slippery-feeling, leave-in stuff that's used in hair products to eliminate frizziness). Leave it on for an hour or so--get the scalp good--then use the nit comb to get them all out. If you don't have one, you'll have to get one, nothing else will work. It takes a while, but they come out more easily. Then wash your hair, your bedding and your brush. And never ever share your brush again.

Tea Tree Oil. There are shampoos that have enough tea tree oil to help you rid yourself of the infestation. Combing them out is good, too, but very tedious. Do you know what the nits (eggs) look like? They are like a tiny tear drop shape very tightly attached to a hair usually near the scalp. They can be removed between finger nail and thumb nail or with a very very fine toothed comb made for that purpose.
Even Tea Tree Oil can be toxic to pets, so use it with care. Its a good antifungal and antiparasitic but its strong stuff. Don't get it in your ears...its painful on delicate mucous tissues.

One of my Daughters came home from school with lice we all got it , it was terrible we worked at getting rid of those things forever, then some one told me to get them out of your clothes put them in the dryer, so I figured why wouldnt that work with the hair too. I got a old fashioned dryer with a hood, a blower may work too. pluss to help things along my eldest daughter and I having verry thick hair, put oil in our hair, put a bag on our heads, and sat in the sun. this is the only thing that worked for us.

Unless kerosene is "natural"... you'll be left with the option of picking out every lice and egg... or shaving.

if you use your hairdryer on dry hair and heat up the hair and scalp (up to the heat you can stand it) this could help, ...you still have to change all of your sheets and vaccum your mattress, and the whole house. If this doensnt work, then you must breakdown and buy the rid
