I have often wondered that while singing along on the radio. I always sing, "I wear my sunglasess at night so i can, so i can see the fruzzles dnhaing in my haeeeeeey!" But I figured those aren't really the lyrics. That's just what it sounds like.
After closer inspection, we find that he wears them for several reasons:
#1. So he can watch you live and breathe your storylines.
Perhaps you were smoking and sending him smoke signals that were illuminated by a very bright light, so it was necessary for him to wear his sunglasses.
#2. So he can keep track of the visions in his eyes.
I think that his sunglasses were mirrored on the inside, that way he could see the reflections of his visions and thus keep track of them better.
#3. So he can forget his name while you collect your claim.
This one is obviously referring to the fact that he suffers from long term memory loss and cannot remember his own name. However, he tattooed it on his hand like Momento. The only way for him to forget his own name is to wear his sunglasses at night so it is so dark he cant see his own hand. Meanwhile you collect your claim at the mining camp.
#4. So he can see the light that's right before his eyes.
Corey was trying to figure out how lightbulbs work. Instead of asking a question on Yahoo! Answers, since it wasn't invented at that point in time, he had to put on some shades at night and really stare at the filament that was glowing right before his eyes.
