Personally I've not been there Yet. But browse through some books about Borneo and it seem to be a nice place to be at.

Plenty to do. In fact I travelled overland from Kuching to Kota Kinabalu in 1994. Batu Niah and the nearby cave where birds' nest soup is harvested is a "must see". Santubong, close to Kuching, was really good, although I believe that it has been developed since I was there. Travelling by sea and river from Kuching to Sibu is an experience and from Sibu it's possible to travel up river further into the jungle, and possibly stay at a longhouse, although I didn't. There's a great rail journey from Kota Kinabalu to Tenom, through steamy jungle, and it's also possible to climb Mount Kinabalu and visit islands from Kota Kinabalu. I'm just telling you the highlights of my trip: there's plenty more to do.
My memory fails me: I did travel up from Sibu to Kapit although it is possible to travel further or negotiate a land cruiser.

I'd like to add another two websites (Sabah):
www.sabahtravelguide.com (best info on Sabah, but mostly commercial tours and not really for backpackers...)
www.flyingdusun.com (tours off the beaten track, not cheap but really cool; talk to Nick, can get good rates...)
Happy Travelling

Hey Cooomas! I'm impressed. You must be quite an adventurer! You seem to know Sarawak & Sabah like the back of your hand. What do you do for a living anyway?
Your answer gets my vote.

first where you want to start your journey? i would suggest start from kuching then travel by bus to each town. Bus the cheapest transportation to travel and you can see the true environment and view of borneo along the road, such as long house, paddy field, etc... You may want to stop at every town. I suggest you to stop and overnite at Sri Aman, Sarikei or Sibu, Bintulu, Miri,. These are major town and plenty of good inn. Don't worry as alot western traveler stay there as well. then you may want to go for hiking at Batu Niah Cave or Mulu cave. Niah cave you can easy travel by bus from Miri or Bintulu. You can rent a chalet or hostel of overnite if you want to spend a night. But if you want to go for more adventurous type, I suggest Mulu cave. 2 ways how to get to Mulu. easy way - by air from Miri. or hard way by river thru Kuala Baram River then to Marudi by express boad. from marudi town you may wan to overnite. next day early morning there a speedboat to Mulu. It take about more than a day to reach Mulu. But it would be very adventurous if you are traveler. You can enjoy to see the environment by river and stream. Once in Mulu, there abt 2 hotels. the price is evensive. But if yoy can make an arrangement with the Long House for stay it ould be nice.
Then from Mulu you can go back to Miri by flight. From Miri if you want to continue to Limbang and Lawas. If by car you need a passport to pass Brunei. If not fly from Miri to Limbang and Lawas. From Lawas or Limbang there a express boat to Labuan. It take abt 2 hrs journey. From Labuan you can travel to KK by boat or by bus from Mumunbok. This just my experience and how I bring people travel.
