Sqare footage = length x width
thus a 9 x 9 room is 81 square feet.
However, if measuring for something such as floor covering, you must also allow for waste. (most carpet is made 12 feet wide) this room would require 12 x 9 material, or 96 square feet (12 sq. yds.)

You times the length by the width in feet and that will give you the square footage . If the room is 10 feet by 12 feet your total is 120 square feet
