No matter what anybody says, there is no one tried and true for sure way to quite that works for everybody. If there were you would not be asking this question. (duh)
The first thing is you have to really and truly dedicate yourself to it. Like most things in life, planning is key. Many experts, and friends that I have had that have quite succesfully chose a day to offcially quite. Generally speaking starting on a monday is best. Don't put it off too far, but don't rush it either. Either make, or buy some sort of calender to put on your fridge, and possibly other places around the house, mark your quite date, and cross off each day untill that day approaches. In the mean time try to cut back.
Talking to your dr is a great step too. There are many medications out there that can greatl increase your chances of quitting. Also, talk to your friends, and family, and ask them to be supportive. If they smoke, as them to respect your choice to quite, and try not to smoke in front of you, at least for the first few weeks. Also try avoiding situations that make your HAVE to have a cigarette. Like if everytime you go to the bar to have a drink with friends you find yourself smoking more, avoid that untill you've quite for a while.
Another great tip is to try and find your smoking triggers, and how to avoid them, or find other constructive things to do. Like do you just have to smoke after you eat? If so, try doing something else. Keeping yourself busy is key. If you need to smoke after you eat, try taking a walk, doing a craft, taking a bath, just something to take your mind off the craving.
I have a few friends that quite by switching to a brand of cigarettes that they just couldn't stand. After about a week, they were so sick of the new cigs, that they lost the craving all together.
Some ppl find it easiest just to simply cut back. Like say you smoke a pack a day. In a week, cut out a few cigarettes. Then the next week cut out a few more, untill eventually your not smoking at all.
What worked for me was I went on the patch, but for the first week, when I got a really bad craving I couldn't stand, I would smoke a cigarette. I went from about a pack and a half a day, to about 5 a day, then eventually after two weeks none. This can be dangerous though, since you CAN get nicotine poisioning.
Some final tips I have though are drink lots and lots of water. This helps to flush the nicotine out of your system faster, so you have less withdrawl symptoms. Don't be fooled though, you will still feel them. If your afraid of weight gain, try keeping healthy snacks around. Like carrot or celery sticks, apples, pretzles, gum, pepermints, whatever you like. Try to stay active. Sitting around thinking about how much you want a cigarette will only make your craving worse, and make it harder on yourself. And like I mentioned before, try to avoid common triggers whenever possible, and get a support system.
You can quite, it will just take time. Take it easy on yourself, if you slip up and smoke, don't just give up. Keep trying. Eventually you will succeed.

since you smoke that much everyday, your body got adjusted having these poisons running ur body. That's why people with more serious drug problems can actually die by quiting abruptly. You hav to take decrease your amount of cigarettes maybe every few weeks or whatever you're comfortable with. The reason why you were coughing and stuff (tryign to not smoke) was because your body was so used to having 2-5 cigarettes a day. So each week you should decrease slowly from 2-4cigarettes, then another few weeks, 2-3, then so on.

I have been smoke free for 2 weeks now, and this is how i quit. I bought some nicoret gum, which I only allow myserlf when I am absolutely crazy. I do, however, keep the gum in sight because it makes me THINK, if I want it, I can have it.
Having the thought of NEVER smoking again is very scary because it is such a stress reliever. Just do it.
Is it hardd? ABSOLUELY! But you can do it and it gets easier and easier the harder you work at it.

I smoked for 25 years and quit 10 years ago using the Nicotrol patch. It's not easy, but it can be done. If I can quit anyone can.
Good luck to you. It's very important to quit.

I just flat out quit - No gums no patches. But I also had a good reason - I was diagnosed as infertile and I know smoking can lend itself to that so every time I got a craving I reminded myself how badly I want kids and how I needed all the help I can get.
One year three months "smober".

I am fairly new to quitting, I quit the first of DEC. So I know it is hard, The main thing to realize is that it is going to take a long time before all the cravings are gone, it will not happen overnight like I wanted it to. you have to reinforce the idea that you are going to be tobacco free every day and at the beginning everytime, anything happens to make you want to go buy that cig.
Take every craving as a challenge that you will win! smoking a cig will make you a loser to tabacco. just keep reinforceing the idea that you will be never again be a smoker. good luck
I went to a parent teacher conference the other day and one of the parents reeked of smoke, my kids said that is how I use to smell, and I will never smell like that again

I spent a lot of time in the hospital for medical purposes. It was a non smoking environment and I had to quit, but I don't recommend it.
