I have many interests, but particulary would like to run a restaurant/club, eventually maybe a casino hotel. I would like to work hard enough to be as successful as G Maloof (Palms), Morton's (n9ne). Is a degree necessary or would taking courses specific to this line of work be enough?

It's a funny situation because many people who get their own companies generally get the idea in college and pursue that instead of the degree they were going for.

Since you mentioned hotel management, Cornell has one of the most talked about hotel management programs. So there are degrees and classes at universities for these things. (Of course).

My personal thoughts about this is simple: Education in any field is good because it brings you up to date or on par with whatever is considered normal at the time. If you try to just work your way into your own business that is possible as well, but it will be harder - and you will end up teaching yourself how the game works anyways.
It also depends on how you plan to run your own business. Are you planning to work and save and start a business? In that case an degree (to get employment)is highly advised.
On the other hand if you have a great idea and the initial capital to get it going , then you might be all set.

So in a nutshell a degree is not necessary, but when you talk about working hard, I can only assume you want to work smart as well. And getting a degree - whether it becomes the deciding factor in your success or not won't really hurt you.

Just my input though.

Nope I own a business and never went to college. I actually think college is a big waste of money when I can use all that money to invest. But some people do need college depending on their career choice and what not, im just an entrepreneur. The best thing I would do is take non credit baking and small business classes at your local community colleges. Its just a set a classes which is usually no more then a month and very affordable way to college. Prob would only cause a couple 100 or so. That way you can knowledge yourself since you never own a business or anything before im guessing

Whoever answered Knowledge is Power, was right. Instead of asking - do i really need to get a college degree for this line of work? you should ask yourself - would it hurt me to get a college degree? Not only would it help, but by taking all req. courses and getting a college degree it will provide you with knowledge that you may have thought you would never need. By taking courses specific to Hotel/Restaurant Management - yes you are preparing yourself for the specific line of work. However getting a Bachelors Degree in Business with a concentration in Management could very well prepare you better for managing a business.

Knowledge is power anywhere. Education is going o help throughout your life including business. Business requires multi-aspect education and not specific to a trade. Go for a business degree and later take some courses specific to the work.

Business degree would be a really good idea. If you want a casino hotel, then definitely business and hotel management.

Bill Gates didn't graduate college and he started Microsoft. Dave Thomas of Wendy's didn't even have high school diploma. If you know you have true smarts for business. go for it.
