It's completely a matter of preference. Just as both Shawn and Sean are correct; Sara and Sarah are correct; Jon and John are correct, etc. Name spelling is totally arbitrary. I have friends with both spellings. I think Rachel might be the most common. In the Bible, the name is spelled Rachel. What is your preference? I think I like it with the A!

As a proper name one could get creative and spell it as one wishes. I think the name is Hebrew and there is a double vowel after the ch pronounced Ra-he-eel, but in the transliteration anything can happen. Look at other foreign names Quadafi or Khataffi ot Kaddafi, depending on the publication.

Ok. If it is said like Rachel from "Friends", it is spelt Rachel.

If it is said like Raquel Welch, it is Rachael.

There is also Rachelle, which is said like Michelle.
