I have a laptop that has wireless capabilities. I am currently using DSL. I would like to know what I need to do to switch to wireless. I know I will need a router. How do I know which one to get? After I've gotten a router and set it up, can I stop my DSL service? If so, who will provide the wireless account? If I need to keep DSL service should I downgrade to the most basic DSL available? Thanks in advance for all the input.

Correct you need a wireless router. You still need your internet service after you get your router.
The DSL modem connects directly to your router. As far as the outside world is concerned there is only one computer on the internet which would be the router. The router will give internet access to other computers in your home. But like I said, the router is the only thing that's "seen" by the outside. You don't need to downgrade your DSL. It's better to get whatever you can afford just in case you want to have multiple computers on the internet at the same time.

You have 2 options, since you already have a DSL Modem buy a Wireless router, or you can buy a DSL Modem *** Wireless router (Dlink).

You need to configure you DSL Username and password and connection settings in your Wireless router.

You should make sure that you clone the MAC Address of the Wireless router with the MAC Adderss of your system.

All DSL Service providers would record your MAC Address and allow only your system to connect to the internet.

In all the wireless routers you have an option to use the default MAC Address or specify a MAC Address. Specify your computers MAC Address over there.

To find out your mac address.Click start>run Type cmd and click ok and type ipconfig /all and click enter The filed Physical address is the MAC Address.

Also make sure that the wireless router is configured for MAC Address filtering. This will make sure that only computers that a specified in the allowed list can access the wireless router.

If not you'll have to get one or use a usb wireless connection like linksys or if you live and/or use your laptop in a hot zone all ya need is a pci receiver card. the best way to get good info is go to a local computer store with knowledgeable staff and friendly and ask some questions if there not busy you'll probably get your question answered and then some. about the dsl contact provider and question them also then put together what ya learned ya might be in luck
