Joining a theater group is a great way to start! Just start out small and work your way up.
If you want to work in the States, you should read this book.

The possibilities are growing. I have a need for two South Asian people in a community theater show I am doing in the Boston area. Unfortunately, for a while, you are likely to be typecast in Indian roles, especially if your accent is fairly strong. However, times are changing and more shows have interesting, diverse characters. Both ER and Crossing Jordan have South Asian characters, though it is not necessarily important that they are South Asian.

Get your acting training. Make up your head shots. Audition anywhere you can and if you are serious about TV work you will need to join the unions SAG and AFTRA and get an agent.

The best of luck.
