Discussion in 4H today, and I can't find anything online about it. The adult leader said a horse's ear could rotate nearly 360º...the only thing I've found online conclusively said 180º. It sounds odd to me after observing horses.
Anyone with experience, and an URL, I would greatly appreciate it. I really dislike my girls having incorrect facts, and it's driving me nuts too.

I think if you take both ears they can cover 360% together. That would make sense. You can't turn a horse's ear all the way around. It used to be common among some to hold a horse still by twisting the horse's ear. They could never go all the way around. They go forward and backward, like you pointed out, 180 degrees each! The open part of a horse's ear never faces inside, one ear toward another ear. The ear goes from forward around to the outside to the neck, when the are angry and pin the ears. The opening still faces out when the ear is pinned back. The tips of the ears can go 180 degrees.

I don't have a URL, but I have six horses!

I have never seen a horse completely rotate its years I'm sure they can't and I have been around them for over 20 years. They can prick them when they are allert or lay them flat when they are aggresive, and as you have found rotate approx 180. Hope this helps
