I'm not bashing,, I just want to know. I know gay people and they don't do that,,? Nor do straight persons have a universal flag advertising straightness./ I'm sure lots of answers will say pride,, yet pride is internal.

Well Shawn,

I'm sure you'll get some heated answers but heres my take. I wear a wristband with a Rainbow triangle on it pretty much all the time. The reason I "advertise" is two-fold. First, I like to make it clear when I meet new people because it's akward when they don't find out for six months.

Second, I'm a pretty big dude. No effiminete mannerisms and very straight acting. It's my little way of letting others know.

Well, being straight is universal and taken for granted. It's expected in this culture. Straight people don't need a straight flag because it is assumed unless stated otherwise, hence the rainbow flag symbol. The gay community is like family - brothers/sisters - for the most part you stick together. Support. And, it's a sure way to let other "family" members know incase they think you are attractive :)

In 1978, Gilbert Baker of San Francisco designed and made a flag with six stripes representing the six colors of the rainbow as a symbol of gay and lesbian community pride. For a long time past the rainbow flag has been a sign under which gays and lesbians declare themselves to homosexuality. The rainbow colours symbolize plurality and love of life.

It has a meaning. .

Shawn, the reason why some gay people show their, "pride" is because they were not able to openly be who they are before. So now that they are out of the closet so to speak of, they can be free. Do you know what that means in today's society? To have some kids thrown out of their homes because their gay or lesbian. Life is not a bowl of cherries for some. And it takes alot to stand up for what a person believes in. Let me say, that for Rosa Parks, it took alot for her to not give in to what society was forcing her to do. She stood her ground! Now after all this time African Americans are still fighting for rights that they deserve. The same for gay rights. It takes alot for people to stand up for what they believe in. And when someone else is still in the closet, and sees someone wearing a rainbow wrist band, or a business that flies a rainbow flag, they know that is a safe place for them and a person that understands what it means to be proud. So pride is not just internal my friend it is external as well, by standing up for what you believe in when the norm is trying to bash you down.

Straight people advertise all the time -- wedding rings, pictures of spouses on the desk, holding hands while walking down the street. You don't even realize that you're advertising it's so internalized.

Gays want to show we're here, we're a viable part of society, and sometimes, it helps to get dates.

WE "advertise" as you put it, as a exclamation of 'community.'
WE have our bumper stickers, jewelery, flags...etc....as a way of identifying ourselves to others of our community.

Hon, it's not always automatic with us. So many of us blend in that without identifiers, we'd be hitting on straight all the time.
Granted, for us to hit on a straight person is actually a COMPLIMENT but they don't seem to see it that way.

Besides, you straights advertise all the time. Just like the first poster said, but also in EVERY form of media and entertainment. Heterosexuality is EVERYWHERE. On the street, in music, on the television, in print, blazoned across billboards...
Don't tell me you guys don't advertise...that's just disingenuous.

i kind of have a problem with the whole gay pride thing myself. I don't understand it and I think it's kind of.... well, gay. But i think some people wear the rainbow and stuff to advertise to take the guessing out of whether or not they're gay or not to others. that's just my 2 cents.

The rainbow is not basically an emblem of gay delight; it really is meant to include variety in all its dissimilar varieties. instantly human beings do not need an emblem, because extremely a lot all people is theory to be instantly except one supplies others some reason to imagine otherwise. As for "promotion," instantly human beings do all of it the time. They promote their heterosexuality with engagement earrings and marriage bands. They promote their heterosexuality even as they have pictures of the spouse and children on their desks at artwork. They promote their heterosexuality every time they carry palms with their sweeties in public or supply them a kiss on the cheek. yet every time a gay or lesbian individual does an identical element, we are accused of "flaunting" our homosexuality! in case you may want to care to understand more effective about the different privileges you appreciate basically for being instantly, please click on the source URL I have presented decrease than. heavily, examine it out - except you're afraid you may want to easily *study* something?
