This is a good book for someone who enjoys being frightened late at night. Many of the titles in the book are out of print. One copy of Medusa sells for $650.00, another for $1,585.00. this is without dust cover and with corners worn down.
In reading the Medusa part of the book you will encounter a madman on an abandoned pirate ship which leads the rescuers toward monstrous evil. Medusa is the weird story of a voyage to unknown waters, when it first came out in 1929 it earned a dredfull review by the london times, but on the death of the Author, Visiak, the times called it a tor do fourse of a book.
The story moves gradually in a slow crescendo from its beginnings in a normal seeming 19th century England. Through adventures at sea and finally into a literal pit of fantasy. A vast circular pit or hole occupied by the epongmous sea monster which eats mature men alive. The hero is a young innocent boy who survives while his conpanions parish.
Another review says Huxtable is a man whose son is a sailor, the son is kidnapped and Huxtablr organizes a search party and crew to meet the kidnappers after Huxtable has raised the ransom. With him is a boy called Will who has run away from school and been befriended by Huxtable. They sail on and find the pirate ship, only to find no pirates are on the ship. No damage to the ship. A man called Vertembus is on the pirate ship. He won't speak but spends his time playing with colored beads. Both will and Huxtable notice that Vertembus has the ability to make them feel happy and remember their childhoods. Then they discover Vertembres' notebook and see in it references to a black rock island. They sail to find the island, when suddenly the ship is lit by a strange green light and sea monsters climb aboard. they take the crew to the black Rock Island. Will faints and when he awakens all the men are gone but one and he sees him in the clutches of one of the sea monsters, with a strangely happy smile on his face.

Such list books are often dull, patchy, or smug literary circle-jerks. This one dodges pretty much all the pitfalls to give something you can dip into, use as a shopping list, or read end-to-end as a history of the genre. Nothing will please everybody's taste (R. Chetwynd-Hayes' 'usual pedestrian flippancy' - how dare you sir!) but I don't think you'll come much closer than this. For both veterans and novices to the world of literary horror, this is highly a rewarding read.
