I mean if you already know the word but you can't think of it... I only use words I knew previous to my search for synonyms.

Using the thesaurus in your writing is NEVER cheating. It's called LEARNING.

No your not cheating. When your teacher says no cheating she means don't plagiarize and copy something off the Internet or out of a book word for word and say their your own. Its good to use a thesaurus. You'll make your writing sound better by using big words that mean the same thing. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PAPER!!!!

Not at all !
You can add a lot of great words to your paper and i found that if i had a word that was kinda right but didn't sound right i'd look the word i chose up in the thesaurus and usually found a great word to add that i was looking for !!

NO. But you're better of writing in Word and then using the thesaurus in it. It's a lot quicker.

No, no more than it is to use a dictionary. Just make sure you're not using words that you think "sound smart." Invariably these just sound awkward--and even inappropriate. The teacher knows that isn't your real vocabularly, just something you pieced together from a thesaurus without really understanding it.

Of course it's not cheating. If anything it's enhancing your work, right?! Teachers in my college require us to have both a dictionary and thesaurus

Writing isn't a test, it's a vehicle for expression. Search all you want for exactly the right word.

Wouldn't that be a way to help increase your vocabulary? I think that it's perfectly fine. How else is a person suppose to increase knowledge if they aren't allowed to seek it?

No, it's actually a very valuable tool for a writer, your teachers will tell you the same thing.
