*LOL* do you mean the actor john hurt? no he is not really disfigured. Now the person he was portraying, John (joseph) Merrick (the elephant man) really was disfigured like that he had Elephantitis- here is a wiki article that explains the condition.

Even though it is based on a true story (and the real guy is disfigured), the actor is not: http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0000457/. His name is John Hurt and has been a lot of films that you'd recognize.

Following the death of the real John Merrick, parts of his body were preserved for medical science to study. Some internal organs were kept in jars, and plaster casts were taken of his head, an arm, and a foot. Although the organs were destroyed by German air raids during the Second World War, the casts survived and were kept at the London Hospital. The makeup for John Hurt, who played Merrick in the film, was designed directly from those casts.

The Elephant Man makeup took 12 hours to apply each time.

Yes, the real elephant man was really badly disfigured. The story was made into a movie portraying him. There is also a book about him. He , like a lot of other people do get a tough hand dealt to them. Makes you feel like you have no problems in life.

John Hurt has had a tough life. He had only just recovered from being really disfigured, when he took a job on a space ship. Soon after this his stomach exploded and an alien jumped out! Some guys have all the luck eh?

John Hurt played Merrick in the film and no it was all make up.
Merrick himself was in real life suffering from the disease which caused his disfigurement.

People where so nasty to him and consider he was a freak (nothing changes in that respect as even today people are cruel towards things they do not understand)
His life changed when he was accepted in the hospital by a surgeon who befriended him and he allowed him to remain in the hospital until his death, he was a gentle well educated man and became an angel after he passed away.

As humans we have the innate capacity to find any disfigurement or disease that changes our form hard to deal with, underneath the shell lies a human and everyone deserves respect love and time because there by the grace of god go I

No, the elephant man was played by John Hurt who was not disfigured but it took 4 hours of make up to get him like that.
The real elephant man wasnt treated as harshly as in the film. He was happy to live in the circus and was well treated by his "master"
In reality, the doctor took him in not for his safety, but to show off at medical conventions. So he turned him into even more of a freak show.
There are some interesting books on him but I cant remember the authors.

The actor in the move was John Hurt, who is not deformed. The movie, however, was based on a true story. The real John Merrick was deformed.

If you mean was the actor disfigured then no, he wasn't. He was played by the esteemed British actor John Hurt; you can Google for him and see he's a fine looking man!

If you're asking whether the film is a true story -- then yes it is! The character really did have a hard time in real life. :(

Yes he was.

During that time people who where different where viewed like animals in the zoo. People paid and lined up to see them. Other examples are the million dollars babies about five small girls born to a poor French Canaden family, and the short people from Africa.
