I have a Dell Windows XP laptop. I've had since Christmas 2004. My friend has a family computer, but I thought it would be nice for her to have her own (she lives with her parents and is 20 with a job). I thought of selling it to her. I want to give my printer too since it came with it when I ordered. It's used and I'm close with her and done much with her family. I happily dated her brother before for 2 1/2 years while us being friends and we still are. How much you think it's worth to sell being used and it being for a close friend?

On average, a computer loses 20% of its value each year, so deduct 40% from what you originally paid for it.

Sell it to her for 30% of the value. Cause there is a difference of a computer that was $1000 and one $400 sold then. The higher price one may still be up to date, cuz of a better motherboard and it could be updated. Whereas the $400 is just barely holding on. They should both be good.

Look in a want ad in your city newspaper. Or go to a computer shop and ask what they would buy it for and then double the price for your friend.

Go to www.craigslist.org, and look around for laptops similar to your; you should be able to get a good grasp of the market value that way.

Also check on EBay.

Then, you have to decide what the friendship is "worth" - maybe 20%? Maybe 50%. Give a discount off the market price according to how you value the relationship.

My own rule of thumb is to sell used items to friends at about 25-50% off present market value ( not new value ).

Well, you have to calculate the actual hardware in it. Let's say you payed 1000 for it, so selling it to a good friend I would say you should sell it to them for ~350. You're not really trying to make a profit, just help out a friend and not totally loose all of your money that you invested in it.
