The setting of the book LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE (the second title in the series) is Wisconsin/Kansas. The family has decided to leave their home in the 'big woods' in Wisconsin and travel by wagon to Kansas. So a good portion of the book follows that journey. Once they get settled and start building a home and whatnot...that is Kansas. They are forced off their land by the end of the book because their land lies within Indian Territory. So they are starting a new journey. They don't head off to Walnut Grove (or anywhere else) until the third book On The Banks of Plum Creek. Most of the books have different settings. The Ingalls didn't stay settled in one place. They don't stay long in Walnut Grove either. And the tv show really does not reflect the books as far as location goes.
