To protect our legs, they are leather, with out them our legs rub against the saddle and we get leather burn. And it hurts!!! They also come in half Chaps, which is what english riders wear.

For a rider with stonger legs wearing just jeans results in pain. I learned that when I went on a weekend trail and forgot my chaps.

You've had some interesting answers, most of them dead wrong, a couple that were close. I grew up on a horse in South Texas and learned at an early age what chaps were good for. We had a lot of mesquite trees, as well as some of the larger types of cactus, and a couple of tree types that had thorns capable of bringing the blood easily. The chaps protected your legs from those thorns. They had nothing to do with chafing your legs. Only a moron rode in shorts. That's why blue jeans were of such heavy material, among other reasons.

they wear them to keep from getting chapped inner thighs.. you can get really saddle sore if you ride a lot.. the chaps protect the inner part of your legs.. also if a cowboy is riding through rough country where there are a lot of tree branches that could snag their legs the chaps prevent it plus they also protect the legs from injury when on the ground tending or treating animals.. CHAPS are very handy indeed..

Funny answers... but Seriously!

"Chaps" protect a cowboys legs while riding. There is a plant called the Chaparral that would tear at cowboys legs when they rode. Chaps protect.

Chaps have a purpose, i'm not quite sure WHAT. But, when you horseback ride you are supposed to wear chaps.

Cowboys wore chaps because they would give a little sting with them to the horse so it would run, Its not used anymore if thats what you think.

One of the reasons they wore chaps was to protect their legs from thistle bushes and cacti bushes. I believe that it also allowed them to keep their legs protected from various stinging insects.
