Do you think it is equally manly for a man to wear rings and it is for a man to have no earings?

If so, when did this come to be?

Men have worn earrings in various times and places, it's not a new thing.
In various ancient tribes such as the Phonecians and the Egyptians, earrings were a sign of rank, worn by both men and women.
Earrings became a "women only" fashion around the early 1900's.
Earrings in men and women have always been used in various primative tribes in Asia and Africa, and modern primatives today, as a sign of rank or having been thru certain rites of passage.
Sailors have worn earrings as a sign that they've crossed the equator or been around the world. Also it was believed that the piercing would help their eyesight and/or hearing. There are in fact accupuncture points on the ear which help eyesight.
During the 60/s men began to reclaim earrings, mostly as a fashion statement by artists and homosexuals, although Mr. T is famous for haivng worn earrings and other gaudy jewelry as a personal statement and he is not usually thought of as an artist or homosexual. Many black men began wearing earrings and other gaudy jewelry to imitate Mr. T.

The times, they are a-changin'.

Seems that boys and young men are just as likely to get their ears pierced these days as the gals. It's still frowned upon by those of us of the older generations, but that doesn't count for much with the kids. If anything, it encourages them. And if you think about it, there's no compelling reason why piercing one's ears should be reserved for girls. That's just the custom many of us grew up with and have accepted as "normal." But what is normal changes with each generation. The one constant in life is change.

I say, if your sons only pierce their ears, you should count yourself lucky.

No, I don't agree. I've seen a lot of really great-looking guys who had earrings on. If they're big though, I don't like them. I think studs look the best. I guess this started happening around the 80's.

No. Earrings are fine on men or women.

"...among sailors...a pierced earlobe often meant that the wearer had sailed around the world or had crossed the equator." Sounds manly to me.

I have books in Spanish that are from the 1400s, back then it describes how people tattooed and perced their bodies men and women. Therefore, I think the human society has been doing it for years and years. "The times are a changing": No, people have been doing it for hundred of years, friend.
