what do I have to do to get and answer to a question similar to this: (5a^3+4b^2) I can't seem to do algebraic equations and it would help me a lot if I could check those kinds of answers on tests.

By the way if anyone is confused (^2) means squared. Of course if you're advising me about my calculator you'd probably already know that, but just so I don't leave any stone unturned. Thanks for your help, you've no idea how much it will help me!

The calculator does not simplify equations, it can solve for them only. There is a function in the TI-84 called solver found in the MATH button, you plug in the equation, notice that it can only be set to zero, this will give you the solutions for the equation, but i believe it only works with one variable. What you can do is search on yahoo for programs that can be downloaded into the calculator that simplify the equation.

A calculator is a poor substitute for learning mathematics.

You've written an 'expression' not an 'equation'; they are different.

I was in a teacher training class recently. We placed outselves on a spectrum regarding calculator use in the classroom. I was way out on the end advocating banning them.
