I have a '94 Jetta and am just getting used to driving stick. I find that when I shift into 3rd I am usually capable of 60km/h but at around 2800 RPMs. Is this OK or is it considered too high? I know that I should be shifting at around 3000 RPMs but I am wondering if keeping the engine at 2800 will cause any damage. Also, is there a distinct smell when the clutch is burning? The car in question is diesel and there seems to be a smell that lingers in it. I am wondering whether this is the diesel or the clutch. Thanks in advance.

it could be the clutch,I'm not saying for sure because i am not there to smell it,but shifting at 2800 is alright, that's not going to burn a clutch out of it ,if you learned to drive in this one ,it may be clutch your smelling, most people do burn a clutch up learning to drive one ,but i really cant say on this one,it may just be the diesel, good luck.

It may be your diesel fuel cuz it's diesel, but you should probably shift into 3rd at 3000 rpms or else you may have 2 replace the clutch.
