I'd like to recommend some 100 books as listed in the web site below, I'm sure they've been scrutinized and evaluated by those famed authors, thus you should find some familiar authors there and read anyone you like.
However, I don't say I like all of them, rather there are some of my favorite titles that might interest you, just in case. They are:
1. The Cairo Trilogy by Naguib Mahfouz
2. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
3. Burmese Days by George Orwell
4. The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston
5. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark, etc.

Here are a few:
1. The Color Purple by Alice Walker
2. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
3. Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
4. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
5. Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
6. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
If you're really ambitious, read War and Peace and Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. I loved both of them!
I could name a million, but I'll stop.
P.S.- I'm an 18 year old in my first year of college, too; these are just a few of my favorites :)

"Between Two Worlds - Escape From Tyranny: Growing Up in the Shadow of Saddam" by Zainab Salbi. It's a memoir of an Iraqi woman who's family knew Saddam Hussein from the time he became president. Fascinating story.

For some light entertainment, try Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (and the sequel, New Moon) and anything by Scott Westerfeld, mostly the Uglies, Pretties, and Specials trilogy, and Peeps (and the sequel, The Last Days) and the Midnighters series by Scott Westerfeld. For an adult book, try Next, by Micheal Chricton (I don't think I spelled his last name right, by he also wrote Jurassic Park)

Well, if you're starting out and you like to read, sounds like you're intelligent so you need a smart woman book:
Anything by the author Tami Hoag: her books are based not only on crime, but also on love, and she makes it work really well! I can't recommend just one by her, because they're all good, so you can't lose!
