I am breastfeeding, going on 17 mths now. From the start, my breasts have always itched. Now though it is so bad im drawing blood. Is this a normal side effect of breastfeeding? How can I stop it or at least make it less itchy. I am letting my daughter wean herself.

Its not my nipples that are itchy, its everywhere else. The tops, and sides.

My breast are like that sometimes, so I know what you're going through. I don't know what it is... I don't draw blood, but I get what looks like bruises underneath them, but nobody seems to know if this is normal... I just try to wash them more often, thing maybe it's from her rubbing against me. Maybe her laundry detergent. I don't know...

I think ( from personal experiance) that its from being wet all the time (babies mouth)
So just have shower and dry your nipples carefully, I found I couldnt wear certain bras ( espeacially lace) or certain tops as they would just make them itch more. I never drew blood but I never scrtached, I'd just rub them vigourously which always made them feel better.
Also after a feeding try letting them air dry for 10 min. You could also try expressing a bit of milk and rubbing onto your nipples and then letting them air dry. Breast milk is great for healing things.
Good Luck with it and if it is getting REALLY bad then you should see a Dr.
Also good on you for feeding for so long and letting your daughter wean herself. You are a great mother

Could possibly be thrush, or yeast. It usually causes pain, but can sometimes cause itching as well. By the way, congrats on sticking it out with the breastfeeding, especially with this little problem you've been having. I breastfed both of mine until they were two. It gives them a great, healthy start!

if your daughter is in daycare or around other babies in daycare it could be thrush. A easy way to tell is look in your baby's mouth if there are white spots in it, then thats what it most likely is. There are symptoms on your nipples too, Im just not sure what they are I just know they get itchy. I would go to your doctor and get them checked and have your baby checked as well by her ped.

could it be a mild allergic reaction to something used on the baby..shampoo or something. i have heard of them sometimes itching due to the increased blood flow to the breasts but never so much as to draw blood. ask your doctor

your nipples are probably dry and chafed. There is a product called LASINOH designed just for that problem.
Good luck.
