No. She wasn't . The first time she wore the fat suit was in season 2, episode"The One With The Prom Video." The next time she wore it was in season 6"The One That Could Have Been 1 & 2."

No, it was a fat suit. Courteney (not Courtney) Cox's first big break when she was cast in Bruce Springsteen's video for "Tunnel of Love", and that was years before "Friends" aired. And she was not fat then. Then she played Alex P. Keaton's (Michael J. Fox) girlfriend in "Family Ties", and she was again not fat.
The scenes where Monica was supposed to be fat were flashbacks to high school, and they of course didn't film her in high school thinking they were going to make a sitcom years later.

There are a few episodes where Monica is 'fat'. Some are flashbacks to when she was growing up and she subsequently lost weight because Chandler called her fat. There is one called The One That Could Have Been where she is still fat and never lost weight but as the title suggests it's what could have been, not what really happened.
