As a European now living in Asia I would certainly say that Europe is more socially aware and conscious of its responsibilities to its countries citizens and that is no bad thing.

Where nearly 50% of Americans have no or inadequate health insurance and their unemployment benefit ends after about six months leaving people to fend as best as they can or to shift the responsibility on to some charity - usually a religious one; few people in 'old Europe' go without health care or basic needs when unemployed.

Yes the UK and other European nations have unemployment benefits, housing (rent) benefits - when people can't pay for housing, they have national health services, child benefits, a 200 pound winter heating allowance etc and the society is better off for that.

People do not need to go cap in hand to some charitable board to beg for help that is needed.

Europe more left - yes and a good job too.

Yes, it is extremely left of center.

Just ask Eastglam, all of the things he stated as being superior to the system in the USA really made him leave Europe.

His ignorance about the American system is a result of the leftist anti-American media in Europe. The figures and examples he gives have no basis in fact.

I do get the feeling that most Europeans expect more entitlements from their government. I heard that in Germany, there are even grants for families to pay for kids' piano lessons. In Britain, there are all kinds of subsidies paid out (sometimes the equivalent of $10 for the elderly to pay for winter heating-- doesn't sound like much heat to me). In the end, the money has to come from somewhere-- you guessed it, the taxpayers. I also get the feeling that it is much harder to save money in Europe because of the high VAT (17% sales tax on clothes in some countries).
