yes, to an extent, just enough to drive out superstition and blind faith. To put India on the road to development and financial independence. Help India participate in globalization of the economy.

Isn't the World already embracing Western Culture????
When I visited India last year, I saw Macdonalds, Pizza Hut, KFC, TGI Fridays, Baskin Robbins and a host of such retail outlets being patronized by Indians wearing Lees, Levis, Nike or Addidas shoes and a wide variety of Western clothes!? All the latest American Movies were playing there!? And you occasionally saw a few Indians in their ethnic clothes drinking Coke!? Not to mention, there were Office buildings of IBM, AMD, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, Cisco, Sun Microsystems and the like lining the roads there!? Ford cars, Mercedes Benz, Suzuki, Hyundai and many more were on the roads with a lot of Volvo busses and Harley Davidsons, Honda and other international brand motorcycles going around there!? Didn't see any elephants and buffalo carts and stuff you'd think is more local, though and they all laughed when I said that that's what people thought they had there!? Almost every second Indian I met there had somebody living in USA or UK or in the West!?
I'm guessin' it's already there, buddy!?!?

The western culture has bought with it its share of goods and pitfalls. It has made our markets more consumerists and free spending society, which in a way is good. But look at the credit card spending debt that people are in today. Good old days people would spend on what they needed. Nowadays people go for shopping to huge malls like they are on a sport! In certain respect it has generated jobs. The freedom that western culture has bought is rebellion amongst youngsters to demand more pocket money. Family values are eroded and parents has now to think of how they will provide for their own future because children will definitely not care for them when they are old.
Openness and promiscuity, permissiveness among younger generation has brought upon us more problems in form of suicides and loneliness. Where our families where our support system, parents are now busy working to make their ends meet and have no time for their children. Competitiveness is growing and is creating a sense of uselessness for those who are not involved in this rat race. Where we could have fought the dominance of western culture with our Indian values, we seem to be loosing precious ground. Our family system was supposed to be our biggest strength, but look at the family system today. Ever couples marriages is going through the rocks, families are broken, divorce rules, live-in relationships, sexual pervertness and what not??? In the end, is western culture really benefitted us!

Hi All..
What's culture? In the process of evolution of mankind human beings adopted certain norms of public life and we call it culture. As barriers and boundaries shrink the world has in fact become very small and the world-wide-web has made it even smaller. Till 20 or 30 years ago trousers used to be seen as a western dress and today every villager wears one. Like is the case of jeans, salwar-suit etc etc. In effect we welcomed what is good and acceptable in Indian conditions and lifestyle. To sum up therefore, what I believe is that western culture is not untouchable; we should adopt and accept whatever is good for us and reject what is not good. And again we Indians are very good in adaptation and innovation - I mean mix and match. Our cultural heritage is so deep that there is no need to worry that western culture will some day over-power Indian culture and Indianism. Englishmen came and went back, yet India and Indianism still remains as powerful and relevant as ever. Jai Hind, Jay Bharat.

Well just looking at how the world develops about 50 years ago it wasnt allowed so much but today kids as young at 12-14 are going on dates which their parents know about.
Even if I support it or not ( which I do support) the current generation born after 1975-1980(maybe some from before) they have all wanted freedom to date girls. So when these kids grow up they will be more care free with their own kids about the whole bf/gf deal cause they will know how it felt.
Unless they grow up to be like their parents & grandparents who were hard assed on the dating subject. It will bite for the kid but I hope it turns out all good. :).

Everything that brings about a positive change is welcome.
But first let us let us understand what do we mean by western culture. It's not those dresses or thes food chains or the technology. It's the attitude and the thinking. Nuclear family is the western culture. Do you think it's good? Each one in the family maitaining his/her own privacy is western culture. Do you think it's good? terhe are lot more such things in the western culture that if accepted by the indian culture can raise alarms here too.
Accepting the culture or not is not so important. Understanding and respecting our own culture is. While talking about Indian culture, most of the people think about villages, dhoti's, sari's, etc. But how can we forget that when our culture was at its peak within ourselves, India was called 'sone ki chidiya' (Bird of gold). As we started dishonoring our culture, considering it as a primitive one, we went downwards. Can anyone explain this?
Just because we wanted to live in peace amongst ourselves, others raided us, tore us apart and we started believing that they are more cultured than us. Funny, isn't it?
Now let us understand Indian culture. It doesn't say that women should not be educated, neither did it ever preach untouchability untill the visitors arrived. When I say visitors, I don't mean the English who ruled India for 200 years but the ones who came to India even before. around 800 years ago. Although caste system was prominent in early India but that was designed for proper management of the territory. Each caste had a duty. Brahmins to teach, Kshatriyas to protect, Vaishyas to trade and Shudras as workers. We were very much organized untill someone dropped in and said that we are wrong. They claimed that we are not humanitarians as we have the caste system prevailing. And those so called humanitarians raided us, torchered us, looted us, finally parted us while leaving. And now they call us hypocrites.
Whatever wealth they have in store in their treasury is only and only due to India. When they go to church, its their faith; when we go to temples, we are superstitious; when they advice their kids, they are caring; when we advice our kids, we are overprotective and restricting their space; when they say touchwood, it's good luck charm; but when we apply tilak, we are primitives. Touching our elders feet is humilating to them cos it's not in their culture. This is clumsy. How do you expect me to support that culture in my country? NEVER...

Seeing as how it makes for the largest democracy on the planet in spite of 200+ languages and cultures, I'd say heck yeah. Add to that the fact that India is surrounded by dictatorships and autocracies, and I'd say the British left you folk a nice parting gift.

You don't have to.
India is having a great cultural background.
No foreign culture is good enough when compared to Indian culture.
Life styles may change due to this globalization, but our culture won't get changed. Its something that we breathe.
