Has the pain worsened? If it has, go see a doctor ASAP.

I doubt it was air in your vein. More likely your body didn't like having something foreign in it for that long. It's also possible that your wound got infected or the swelling was caused by a bolus (collection of fluid under the skin), which I understand is very painful. The skin of the hand is very sensitive and full of nerves. It's possible that you are just experiencing normal pain.

If the spot feels very warm, has pus, suddenly bruises or continues to hurt in the same intensity then go see a doctor, you may have an infection. You were in the hospital for 5 days, so your health may not be what it should be for you to deal with such an infection. I hope you feel better!

Very unlikely that it is air that got in through the IV. It is not uncommon for an IV to infiltrate from the vein rupturing or the needle pulling out of the vein and then the fluids go into the tissues causing swelling. This can be very painful from the pressure caused by the fluids, and it will decrease with time as your body absorbs the excess fluids. If the area becomes red, warm to touch and the pain level continues to increase, and possibly pus, there could also be infection present which may require another doctors visit to get an appropriate antibiotic. If it is just infiltration, it will take care of itself. Application of mild heat for 20 minute periods could also help to increase the circulation and thus the rate of absorption and help relieve the pain faster.

i hope air didn't get in your vein!! but , ouch i had the same thing with the i.v before they hit the bone in my hand with the needle, took about a week and a 1/2 for the pain to go away. go back to the doctor soon if it doesn't go away, that's how i found out they hit the bone, i went back....again ouch! brought back a bad memory.
