Unfortunately, it is common , they just don't "get it" until it is gone - job , family, home , savings .
Some are lucky and just loose the stuff then have to start over but they finally understand only a very tiny minority of people actually win , 99% are losers !
A few engage in crime at work, like embezzlement to try and cover losses but end up getting busted and go to jail. Those people have a much harder time starting over, because they are felons on top of it all.
If gamblers could really get that 99% of gambling is loosing, maybe they would not be so stupid . . .
or maybe they would keep trying to be the 1%.
Hard to know. Hope this is an acquaintance and not you.

There was a man in our place, very rich; owned acres and acres of land. He had so many lands he practically owned the city and its neighboring areas.

He did not have to work because he had income from the tenants in his land. To occupy his time, he gambled. Daily. For hours and hours.

He was a poor gambler that he would always lose and ran out of cash. When he no longer had cash, he would bet his land titles. He lost them. All of them.

He died penniless, his family in hardship.
