A Fluorescent bulb
Your home center will carry equivalent fluorescent bulbs for a 60 Watt bulb. This light is 90% efficient vs. 60% for a standard bulb, so the waste heat given off will be less, the bulb will last longer, it will be just as bright, but it will use less electricity.
A really high priced option is an LED bulb. Which uses an array of LEDs to provide the light. LEDs are 99% efficient, but the cost to make the bulb is still too high. It is harder to find these bulbs.
The only two problems: First the bulbs cost more. The second problem is that a lot of these fluorescent bulbs are taller than a normal light bulb.
I found a 23 watt bulb that is the equilivent to a 100 watt buld for $7.99 at Home Depot: http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS/EN_US/diy_main/pg_diy.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1924214904.1170131845@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdjaddkddjghdkcgelceffdfgidgmk.0&CNTTYPE=PROD_META&CNTKEY=misc/searchResults.jsp&MID=9876&N=2984+3004&pos=n04
This bulb will put out much more light, but it will generate about 1/3 of the heat generated by a 60 Watt standard bulb.
Additonal Details:
I was wrong light bulbs are only 5% efficent read this artile: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/energy_california_lightbulbs_dc
It discusses the California effort to render incandasant bulbs ILLEGAL, because they waste so much energy. I am so glad that I converted the bulbs in my house and got rid of the standard old bulbs that seem to be about as advanced the Model T.

a compact fluorescent bulb is the way to go, as the previous answerer stated.
These are the coil shaped bulbs that you can find at any department, discount or hardware store.
They do make these bulbs shaped like traditional light bulbs as well.
The are much lower wattage (and lower heat) than traditional bulbs, and last many times longer.
The drawback is price, they aren't cheap at all (Lowe's sells some 13 watt bulbs, which i believe are the equivalent of a 60W regular bulb, in 3 packs for around 8 bucks)
You could even go with 23 w bulbs, which equal 100w in terms of brightness. It is best to buy these suckers at lowe's or home depot, because most other places seem to overcharge for them.
I have them in every fixture in my house, and have noticed a slight dip in my electric bill. Happy bulb hunting!

Yes....get a florescent bulb. They give off less heat and use less electricity. A florescent bulb that gives the equivalent of a 60 watt incandesant bulb will use 20 watts or less and produce less heat. However, the bulb will cost more to purchase.

yes, you can get florecent light bulbs (sorry about the spelling) and you can get them at 60 watts, and they will only take up like 15 watts, it saves you money too. try checking at somewhere like lowes, or the home depot.
