I think that depend on what person you are. e.g. Senior persons like to call a lady, Darling. I heard from the radio talk show, the host is called. she was happy to be called in this way. Some female senior persons like to call young guys honey.

One syllable words work best. Two syllables at the most if the accented syllable is over stressed...ho RAY!...DE fense...
