gamefaqs.com should have some faqs. I won't explain everything, but here's a quick summary.

Full raids can be 10-man, 20-man, or 40-man. Raids are for opposing cities (attack mainly Orgrimmar if you're Alliance, or Stormwind/Proudmoore Isle for Horde side), battlegrounds (when you play Arathi Basin, it's a raid, since it consists of a party of more than 5 people) or dungeons, like UBRS (Upper Black Rock Spire). They're generally against an elite area, boss, or anything that requires massive player teamwork. While, technically, raids can be any level, most non-battleground raiders are 57 and up. When raiding, it's like a party, but a lot bigger, and every class plays certain roles like in a dungeon party; priests (if they're specialized as holy in their talent tree) heal, warriors tank, etc.

If you're under lvl 50, you mainly don't need to worry about raids.

One more thing, in high level raids, epic/rare items (purple or blue in name) drop, or BoP (Bind on Pickup; once you have it, it cannot be traded with other players) and you should nearly always pass on it if you don't need it (needing as in your character can equip it and use it). If you falsely click need, or even greed, a rare item for selling if another player really needs it, it's called ninjaing.

There are also highlevel guilds that specialize in raiding; guild members that know each other and are friends with each other are much more likely to work well with each other. If you're serious about raiding, join a famous, large raiding guild on your server.

Good luck WoWing; if I missed some key points, try reading gamefaqs or another help site.

Technically, a raid is any group larger than a party (5 man). When recruiting for a group, once you pull in a sixth member, the group automatically converts to a raid. A raid is organized into separate groups, although they are link together. This will allow you to organize and divide up the raid into smaller units. The overall maximum size of a raid is 40 men (8 groups of 5 man parties), however, depending on the exact instance or encounter, there may be a cap on the number of raid members (10 man, 25 man, etc).

For instance, in the Battlegrounds, Warsong Gulch is a 10-man raid, Arathi Basin is a 15-man raid and Alteric Valley is a 40-man raid.

There is no limit on what level you have to be to jion a raid, but until you reach level 57-58, there is very little content that would require a raid (with the exception of the BattleGrounds). You can join a raid for the purposes of attacking or defending a city or just general ruckus. But you won't be able to run any lower level instances as a raid.

Probably the earliest raid you will encounter is the Blackrock Spire (both upper and lower, although lower can really be handled as a 5-man party). These will require you to be about 58 (depending on your group's experience. After that you will have Onyxia's Lair, Zul'Gurub, Ahn-Quiraj, etc (all of which will require you to be 60).

"raids" (a term originating from EverQuest gameplay) requiring up to a maximum of 40 players. The highest level, most complex dungeons, and encounters are designed to take raiding guilds months of playtime and many attempts before they succeed.

In particular, the game areas designed specifically for level 60 characters are generally much more raid-dependent (and time-consuming) than the relatively more casual experience of advancing one's character from levels 1 to 60.[5] The majority of World of Warcraft's endgame content (i.e., content specifically designed for level 60 characters) requires raiding, with raids making up the bulk of the game's development since release.
