This is for current University Park students. I'm currently a sophomore at a Penn State satellite campus getting ready to go up to main in the fall. I just wanted to know if I should get a dorm or apartment. I also would like to know the pros and cons of both apartment and dorm life. My friends have told me that I haven’t experienced college life until I stay in a dorm.

Well, it depends. If you like privacy, get an apartment. Most people find it hard to study in a dorm, because of noise, people stopping by your dorm, etc. Most of the time, you share sleeping quarters with a person in a dorm, unless you get a single. So it's important to think about that. Myself, I never liked the idea of sharing living space with someone I don't know. But if you have a friend to dorm with, that's better. Also, most of the time, there's a common bathroom in dorms that you have to share with 2-3 other people or sometimes a whole floor. Also, many dorms make you move out during summer break, or pay extra, so if you plan on staying in the area for your job, etc., an apartment may be better. Dorm life can be great though. You meet many different people and it's great for your social life. However, if you are not interested in meeting new people and like your privacy, opt for the apt. Hope this helps and good luck!

dorms are small. you have less freedom. typically you will have a roommate in the same very small room as you. dorm food sucks. the only up side is living around all the students and making friends(and that could even turn out bad if you live next to a lot of bad dorm-mates)... an apartment is more expensive, but the luxuries by far make up for that if you can afford it.

APARTMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh gosh... where do i start... dorms can be hell!!! especially if you are more mature than the crazy freshmen who are experiencing freedom for the first time. it is soooo annoying. i had the weirdest room mate... and NO personal space... i had people on heroin and who knows what else... across the hall... and some bi-sexual whores... and one of which spoke so loudly... and i had to listen to her life story all freaking day & night... through the paper thin walls... oh... and it was just obnoxious...

an apartment is great because you have your own personal space... and don't have those stupid mandatory meetings... or rules...

ok, so you need to do what will make YOU happy-- not what others would do. i lived in a dorm for the first year only because it was mandatory. the second year, i conned my mother into lying for me that i lived at home. (weirdo rules at this particular college) i was so much happier. point being: i never really wanted to live on campus. living there was just my only option at that point in time.

A lot of it depends on what you can afford. With a dorm, you have to share it with one other person whom you probably don't know. That is unless you can afford to be in a dorm room by yourself. I'd prefer an apartment. It's quieter for when you want to study. Plus the place is your "home". A dorm room is not. Good luck in college. :)

Both have their good points and I would definately recommend staying in the dorms for at least 1 semester.

when I first away and have been given a puppy i choose for a rat. they are clever, love human interest, yet on the comparable time they do wonderful in a cage and left on my own (in case you had to bypass away for the weekend). I enjoyed them soo plenty i had 14 in approximately 10 years. they are inexpensive and easy to scrub. I went away on vacations and that they've been wonderful left on my own for some days. in addition they study their names and tricks too. I own fish too and that i discover cleansing them are plenty worst than a rat.... i'm useful you will choose for whats right for you. stable success on your seek!
