I wish I was a #1, but most times, I'm a #2 anymore (I used to be a #4). Depending on the situation #3 is ideal and what I try to be, but most people aren't anylitical and just don't get it.
My advice? Be a #5, (asess the situation), but if the other person is being unreasonable and there's nothing the two of you can come to as a compromise...revert to #1. You can't please EVERYONE!

depends on the person: but I guess unfamiliar person will not be taliking like that so it must be a known person, right. Then one of these option:

on most occassions 1, however if i really want to belittle them then 3.
Generally like to do 3 in front of a crowd and get them to be very specific, questioning every answer they give, this works best when the person is above you in rank i should mention.
it is easy to use 3 as an offensive tool rather than to seek closure. so iff you are such inclined do be careful.

5. other. I don't curse at them, but I have a knack of pointing out peoples flaws that they probably aren't aware of and I would tell them. I am very critical, but I don't openly talk about what I am thinking or observe.
